IRVING, Texas - While the Cowboys might not have closed out Texas Stadium on the highest of notes, the collection of former players and coaches here Saturday night was quite a sight.
Here are few quick quotes from various players and other important figures that helped make Texas Stadium such a memorable place:
Chad Hennings
"It's surreal [to be back]. Its enjoyable to be able to get together with my old teammates as well as the guys who preceded me in playing, but its also kind of sad in the fact that they are going to tear the old great lady down; it's good and bad. The memories are the Super Bowls, the NFC championship games, the relationships with my teammates, the ups and downs, it was life. It's surreal too to think that I was a Dallas Cowboy and played on the same field as Bob Lilly, as Tony Dorsett, as Roger Staubach; great memories."
Emmitt Smith
"This a wonderful place, lots of great memories, it's going to be a great night." (Favorite memory) "Coming down the tunnel the first night I played and seeing the names on the Ring of Honor was very inspirational."
Larry Cole
"I played in the first game and we won the first game so I expect the Cowboys to win this game too. This place is special to us, I played in the Cotton Bowl three-and-a-half years, but this is where we won championships."
Blaine Nye
"I just saw Butch Johnson who I hadn't seen in 20 years, we're just happy to see each other and reminisce. I just met Nate Newton and told him he was a throwback and he should've been playing with us. And that's just it: when you play the game, the fun of just being together with guys that share the same interests, that's what you miss the most."
(Favorite memory) "Well, I scored the touchdown my last year, my spike is still the best spike in Cowboys history, at least in the legend of my mind. Linemen don't uses score and I wanted to spike it but "Too Tall" Jones came over to hug me and I didn't want a hug; I waited 13 years to spike it and I finally did it in the last year of my career."
Charles Haley:
"It's exciting, it's an exciting day; the only thing to make this day better is a Cowboy win."
"It was just a great time here, winning those championships and playoff victories. I get to come back to see all the great players and some of the players I played with. There are so many memories I can't pick just one."
Randy Whit
"It's kind of special tonight since it's the last game they're going to play; I'm just glad I have a chance to come out here and I hope the team wins."
"I'm looking forward to seeing all my former teammates; I don't get to see them very often except when there's a function like this. It's a lot of memories for a lot of people and it's sad to see it go but there's one thing we can be sure of: things will change. That new stadium is beautiful and it'll be a lot of fun."
Bob Lilly:
"I've been back a couple times this year and it's always nice to get back. Unfortunately this will probably be the last time. But I get to see a bunch of my old teammates and a bunch of other Cowboys who played after me. I started out here in '71, the eighth game of the season and of course we won the Super Bowl that year. I have a lot of fond memories here and I've been to a lot of games since I retired."
"I think the first game was very interesting with New England, we had never played them before and they had a big running back, about 250 pounds, and we held them four times on the 1-yard line and I had one shoe on and one shoe off and I was wondering if I could get any traction, and I did. It was kind of fun, we beat them handily. I remember the locker rooms were nice; all around the locker rooms were really cramped and we had a spacious locker room. I'm excited to see the locker rooms at the new stadium."
Roger Staubach:
"It was such a great moment just to be here with all of these guys. You never forget the stories and the guys - but when it all comes back like this for one night, it's just really special and you forget how much it seems like yesterday when we were here. Tonight, was a lot of fun. I knew it would be. I just wish we would've won the game. I really thought, when they went down and scored that second time, that we were going to come back and win this one. But I couldn't believe (the Ravens) would get another long run like that. It wasn't meant to be. But it doesn't diminish the feelings that we have for this stadium and this night. It's still very special."
Bill Bates:
"This is what it's all about. This will always be a special place. One loss will not erase the memories from all the years. There are so many great memories that came from this place. We appreciate all the fans and especially the ones that came out tonight. It was a great feeling to come out that tunnel one more time."
Stephen Jones:
"My first time here was when we were looking at buying the team. We sat up in Bum Bright's guest box, my father and mother and I came to see a game against the Giants, and I got to see that game, and of course after that probably the first time we rolled up here when we had the team and met with (stadium General Manager) Bruce Hardy up in the offices. Probably the thing I remember most is Emmitt getting the rushing championship, or beating Green Bay to get to that Super Bowl. It's just always been great being here and being a part of the hole in the roof, and everything that this place represents, obviously all the great players that have played here. It's a neat place."
FB Robert Thomas
(Favorite moment has to be lead blocking for Emmitt Smith as he set the record?)
"Most definitely. What was it, Oct. 27, 2002, against Seattle. That's probably one of the greatest moments of all time, but every moment I had here was great. I have no complaints, I love everybody, I love everything that's gone on here. It's a great organization, just look at this right here, closing down the old stadium, bringing in the new, and they're bringing back everybody."
Brad Sham
(long-time play-by-play voice of the Cowboys)
"I would think my favorite memory is the Redskins game in '79 (Roger Staubach's last at Texas Stadium) because it was one of the first games I did play-by-play and it was such a good game. There was so much at stake. That game was the epitome of what the Cowboys at their best are all about. There were Hall-of-Famers for both teams on the field that day, the Redskins wound up missing the playoffs because they lost the game and it was Christmastime, so much emotion. That was the epitome of everything that is the best for fans about Dallas Cowboys football, that game."
Randy Galloway
(radio personality and longtime DFW columnist)
"A lot of individual things, of course. The Leon Lett game (on Thanksgiving Day 1994) I still think is the most . . . it's like a laugh game and a what-the-hell moment at the same time. But I think more than anything what I liked was the fact that two Super Bowl champion dynasties, two Super Bowl dynasties, were born here. And to watch that (1-15) '89 team and what would happen to it over the course of five years and watch it unfold at Texas Stadium was still, I think, one of the most amazing things in sports history. And that's any sport right there. So if I've got a highlight, that's it - that five-year period from '89, the absolute bottom, to the best team in football, a dynasty."
